"Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" "Things..."is a collection of stories which takes us into the lives of several different women. The characters intertwine as they struggle through their individual hardships and triumphs. Sisters Carol (Cameron Diaz), who is blind, and Kathy (Amy Brennamen of NYPD Blue). a police detective, eat dinner and discuss how their respective days went. Carmen is getting ready for what appears to be a date. Dr. Elaine Miller (Glenn Close) cares for her invalid mother on her day off. Christine Taylor, a psychic, pays a house visit to Elaine and tells Elaine that she's unhappy, but will find love from an unexpected companion. Rose (Kathy Baker) is a single mom raising teenage son, Jay. She is intrigued by the arrival of a new neighbor, Albert, a dwarf. Jay is fascinated with the idea of meeting him. Later that day, Rose gives Albert a ride home from the grocery store. While driving, they talk openly about themselves. later, Rose sneaks over to Albert's for a tryst but doesn't go through with it. Rebecca (Holly Hunter), a bank manager, enjoys a cigarette in the parking lot, but is interrupted by Nancy, a homeless woman with a frank attitude. Rebecca is made uncomfortable by Nancy who clearly has Rebecca's number. Later, she discovers that she is pregnant from her affair with a married man. Rebecca must decide whether she wants to have the baby against Robert's wishes. Unable to sleep, Rebecca goes to a bar and runs into Walter, who also works at the bank. They end up spending the night together. Christine (Calista Flockhart) cares for Lilly, who has grown terribly sick. Christine and Lilly are lovers, but both know the end is near. In the final hours, they reminisce about their early relationship and happier times. After Christine drifts off to sleep, Lilly wanders over to the window. Below, in the street, Carmen passes by. Later, when Christine awakes, Lilly has passed away. Kathy, investigates the apparent suicide of Carmen who was found dead in her apartment. Despite the overwhelming evidence which points to suicide Kathy is bothered by Carmen's death and continues to investigate. She interviews Angelica, a neighbor with some limited dealings with Carmen but doesn't really uncover anything. A visit to the morgue introduces Kathy to Sam, the medical examiner. He can provide no new information for Kathy's investigation, but Kathy finds herself enjoying his company. At home, Kathy tells Carol about Carmen's suicide. Kathy knew Carmen from high school. Carol has her own theories behind Carmen's motivations for committing suicide which seem frighteningly accurate. Carol tells Kathy that she has a date with Walter (the man from the bank), who she met at Braille reading class where she was teaching his daughter. Later when Sam calls to invite her out, Kathy lies to Carol, saying that the call was about work. As Carol waits for her second date with Walter (who doesn't show up), Kathy sneaks out for her date with Sam. end |
